At a moment when cranes are the scarcest in years, DCBIA’s Annual Meeting + Insights convenes the developers who are building in a market whose fundamentals are being rebuilt and in a regulatory environment that needs to keep pace.

The numbers tell the story: the District’s crane count peaked at 45 in early 2021; roughly six operate today. Multifamily starts hit a fifteen-year low last year, even as the city’s housing crisis grows more urgent. D.C. has been growing housing almost entirely by breathing new life into its downtown office buildings. But the open field is bigger than downtown: aging federal buildings in our midst, and room across all eight wards for thoughtful infill that rises along the transit lines that tie our neighborhoods together.

That’s not just a challenge; it’s a runway.

As D.C. embarks on its new chapter in 2027, the question is how quickly that runway becomes cranes. Each building delivered is the work of a whole city, including community members and every discipline of the real estate development industry, each with a hand in how our city grows.

The next several years are DC’s chance to prove how fast we can move, together.
