Entitlements 101: How DC Projects Actually Get Built
May 8 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

On May 8 at noon, DCBIA is pulling back the curtain on the “confusing” parts of the development entitlement process. Join us for an engaging virtual panel designed for young professionals and anyone curious about how real estate development projects actually get approved then built in Washington, DC.
This session breaks down the often-confusing world of “entitlements” and “master planning” into clear, practical concepts. Our panel of local real estate development professionals and the D.C. Office of Planning will explain how a piece of land goes from an idea on paper to a fully approved development project – and why that process can take years. Along the way, they will share real examples of working with agencies like the Office of Planning and the Zoning Commission, as well as neighborhood groups that help shape what ultimately gets built.
What you’ll walk away with:
- A plain-English understanding of what “entitlements” actually mean
- How D.C. zoning rules influence what can (and can’t) be built
- The role community voices play in shaping development in D.C.
- An overview of the different career paths involved in large-scale projects — from development and design to law, finance, and public policy
- Insight into how young professionals can break into and grow within the real estate industry
Whether you’re exploring career options or just want to better understand how cities evolve, this panel will provide a behind-the-scenes look at how development decisions are made — and who’s involved at every step. A live Q&A will give attendees the chance to ask candid questions about career journeys, industry challenges, and how to get started.
You are encouraged to submit your questions for the panelists at check out. Camera-on networking is encouraged during the final Q&A—this is your chance to be seen by the leaders moving the District’s most significant projects.
