June 9 @ 6:34 pm
DCBIA Design Charrette for Community Improvement Day 2026
June 10 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Join us remotely on Wednesday, June 10, 2026 at 6pm to learn about the upcoming plans for the revitalization of East Capitol Urban Farm for DCBIA’s Community Improvement Day project. This is a prime opportunity for your firm to step into a leadership role, head up a specialized project zone, and drive the collaborative design and construction process firsthand. Following this virtual kick-off, we will transition into a regular schedule of in-person charrettes, remote check-ins, and coordination meetings throughout June to build out a dynamic “refresh” plan that serves the residents of Ward 7 and all visitors.
We are returning to a legacy site we originally built in 2015 as our signature volunteer project, partnering once again with the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) and collaborating with the DC Housing Authority (DCHA). Share this invitation with past volunteer leaders—it is a legacy worth continuing!
Our 2026 Design Co-Chairs are Harsheen Kaur, RA LEED Green Associate and Bhavi Venkitaraman AIA, WELL AP Associate of Perkins Eastman and Our General Contracting Co-Chair is Nick Kemp, Project Manager, HITT Contracting.
Zone Leadership Opportunities & Next Steps
We are actively looking for firms and individuals to serve as Design and General Contractor Zone Leads. During our initial June and July charrettes, we will formally map out and allocate leadership for the following core focus areas (subject to change):
- Zone 1: Community Recreation & Green Infrastructure (Enhancing public-facing green spaces, rain gardens, drainage swales, and outdoor neighborhood programming).
- Zone 2: Outdoor Pavilion & Farmers Market Logistics (Improving community spaces, seating infrastructure, and agricultural/market support areas).
- Zone 3: Indoor Classroom & Facility Upgrades (Addressing training facility comfort, structural repairs, pest mitigation, and immediate site-wide infrastructure needs).
- Zone 4: Future Outdoor Learning & Special Projects (Developing alternative teaching layouts and exploring specialized support features).
Note: Additional project scopes and micro-zone opportunities will be actively identified and finalized during our working sessions throughout the month of June. Come ready to pitch ideas and claim your team’s footprint on the site!

Fundraising: We are also partnering closely with the DCBIA Young Leaders Committee this year to drive our fundraising efforts forward! Volunteering for the silent auction committee is a great way to get involved. You will help us reach out to companies to secure exciting items and unique travel, dining or other fun experiences, and then celebrate with us at our Networking Happy Hour on August 18, featuring our very own celebrity board member bartenders! Note at registration checkout if you or your team wants to join this fun and help us hit our fundraising goals.
