In its 26th year, DCBIA hosts a “Community Improvement Day” to renovate a community site each fall. Preceded by months of design and community engagement meetings, teams of DCBIA members gather on different zones across the site to finalize design plans.
This year, DCBIA will renovate Keene Field in Ward 5, an open field that abuts DC Bilingual Public Charter School and Briya and Bridges Schools. The site is an open field and DCBIA continues to meet with community members to determine enhanced uses of this popular site.
DCBIA design and general contractors continue to meet with community members to breathe life into and envision enhanced uses of this already popular, but underutilized site. The design elements include hillside games, entry portals, butterfly gardens, seating and shade structures, a walking path, exercise equipment, way finding and educational signage, adding portals for future community projects, repainting stripes of school parking lot, as well as basic but necessary upgrades to include replacing perimeter fence, fallen tree removal, brush clearance, replanting ground cover, earth leveling, resoding soccer field, and much more.
The 2018 Design Co-Chairs are Sonal Shah, Project Manager, HOK Architects and Leon Ge, Architect, HOK Architects and General Contractor Chair: Meral Kanik, Project Engineer, Gilbane Building Company. They are currently working now through September with a team of DCBIA volunteers to prepare us for Community Improvement Day scheduled for Saturday, September 22, 2018.
