9 1/2 Street Initiative – Grimke Adaptive Reuse and Conversion

On Wednesday, June 25, 2025 at 4:00 PM, join the DCBIA Construction & Development Committee, Community Three and Torti Gallas and Partners for an in-person tour of the recently completed 9-1/2 Street Initiative comprising the Grimke School and its adjacent residential buildings, Fold and The Thread, located at 1923 Vermont Avenue NW in the Greater U Street Historic District of Northwest Washington, DC.
Built in 1887, the Grimke School is an adaptive reuse project housing approximately 65,000 square feet of cultural space, arts uses, and loft-style office, including the new permanent home of the African American Civil War Museum and the international headquarters of the award winning architectural firm, Torti Gallas + Partners. The tour will include the Thread a 38 unit apartment building recently delivered in April 2025 repurposed from the original auditorium building of the Grimke School.
